Read a toy’s age marking before deciding whether its activity suits your child. A label such as 3+, 6+ or 10+ gives the stated starting age. A second question is how much help the child will need to enjoy the toy. Those checks serve different purposes.
For example, a mathematics set marked 36+ months can contain multiplication symbols without expecting every three-year-old to use multiplication. Equally, being good at puzzles is not a reason to buy a toy below its stated age range. Here is how to read the labels when shopping in Dubai or ordering toys online in the UAE.
What do 3+, 36 months+, 6+ and 10+ mean?
| Marking | Starting age stated | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| 36+ months | 36 months = 3 years | Warnings, instructions and the activity’s difficulty. |
| 3+ | 3 years and above | How the child will use the toy and the help needed. |
| 6+ | 6 years and above | Reading, preparation, components and adult involvement. |
| 10+ | 10 years and above | The intended user’s actual age and the full instructions. |
A plus sign does not give an upper age limit, but it also does not guarantee that every older child will enjoy the toy. A simple matching board may suit one child’s interests and feel too easy for another.
Use the actual product’s label
Different products in the same category can have different age markings. The Wooden Screw and Colour Matching Board has a photographed 36+ months mark. The Dinosaur DIY Slime Activity Pot has 6+ on the pictured display. The Crystal-Growing Science Experiment Kit is marked 10+ on its packaging.
“Educational,” “sensory” and “science” describe product categories or activities; they do not establish one age rating for the whole category. Read the individual product record and confirm the pack you will receive.

Age marking and activity difficulty are separate checks
The Wooden Arithmetic Tile and Challenge Card Set illustrates the difference. Its stated age guidance is 36 months and above. The components include number tiles, mathematical symbols, two trays and reference cards.
A beginner might find a named number or copy a short sequence. A child who already knows the symbols might build and check a calculation. You can simplify a task while following the product’s age guidance. That is different from treating a more advanced age mark as optional.
Start with one action the child can already attempt, then offer one extra challenge. The goal is useful play, not proving that a child is ahead of an age group.
What if the child is nearly the stated age?
Use the child’s actual age for play now. “Nearly six” still describes a five-year-old. For a future birthday gift, make the intended start date clear to the parent and keep the packaging with the gift.
Do not assume adult supervision cancels an age warning. Follow the stated age and the supervision instructions together. If a label or warning is unclear, ask for a readable photograph before buying.
What about toys for children under three?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s toy guidance advises following packaging information and keeping toys with small parts away from children under three. Use that as general safety guidance alongside the actual product’s instructions.
A cute animal, a soft-looking shape or the words “baby doll” are not evidence of an infant age rating. A 3+ toy is not a two-year-old option in this guide. Look for a product explicitly intended for the younger child, with clear instructions and warnings.
How to handle mixed-age siblings
Check which child will have access to each toy. A set chosen for an older child can include parts that are inappropriate for a younger sibling. Plan where the older child will use and store it, and keep its pieces together.
If a family wants one shared present, start with the youngest participant’s age requirements, then consider whether the activity interests everyone. Buying one large set does not make every component suitable for every sibling.
Ask for the missing information before paying
- Identify the exact product and selected variant.
- Ask for a clear photo of the age marking and warnings if they are not readable online.
- Confirm whether the picture shows one supplied set, an assortment or a shop display.
- Check required preparation, power supplies and supervision in the supplied instructions.
- Choose an activity that fits the child’s interests and current understanding.
A visible age mark is useful buying information. It does not, by itself, prove a laboratory test, certification or licence. Ask about any specific documentation you need rather than assuming it from a photograph.
Quick questions about age labels
Is 36 months+ the same starting age as 3+?
Yes. Thirty-six months is three years. Read the rest of the label and warnings too.
Does 3+ mean the toy becomes unsuitable at four?
No upper limit is stated by that marking. Interest and challenge still matter when choosing for an older child.
What if the website and packaging disagree?
Pause and ask the seller to confirm the exact version and its age guidance before use. Do not resolve a conflicting label by guessing.
For practical examples, read the guides for ages 3–5, ages 6–8 and ages 9–12.
